ST. LOUIS—Manny Machado homered and drove in three runs, rookie Jackson Merrill also had three RBIs, and the San Diego Padres defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7–4 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series.
“We have fun every day,” Merrill said. “We play hard. If you win, you win. If you lose, you lose. We’re not going to look back on the previous day. We’re here to win games.”
