Dejan Joveljic scored on a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time as the Los Angeles Galaxy, after blowing a two-goal lead, rallied for a 3–3 draw against the Seattle Sounders on Aug. 19, in Carson, California.
Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Victor Vazquez scored in the first half for the Galaxy (10–11–4, 34 points), who remained winless in their past nine matches (0–5–4) against Seattle.
Raul Ruidiaz had a goal and an assist and Kelyn Rowe and Jordan Morris also tallied for the Sounders (10–13–3, 33 points), who moved from 10th to seventh place in the Western Conference and above the playoff line.
Joveljic’s equalizer came after a video review determined the ball went off the arm of Seattle defender Xavier Arreaga after Nick DePuy’s header in the 88th minute.
Joveljic blasted the ball into the center of the net as Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei went to his right.
The Sounders scored three times in a 20-minute span to take a 3–2 lead.
Rowe pulled Seattle within 2–1 in the 53rd minute on a blistering shot from just outside the top left of the 6-yard box following a cross from Ruidiaz.
Ruidiaz tied it in the 61st on a header from 10 yards out off a cross from Nicolas Lodeiro.
Morris gave Seattle a 3–2 lead in the 73rd minute. Lodeiro’s cross set up Yeimar Gomez for a header from the top of the 6-yard box, on which Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond made a diving save.
Morris tapped the rebound into an open net.
Chicharito opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The Galaxy methodically moved the ball down the field before a pass went out wide to Kevin Cabral on the right wing.
Cabral’s cross found Chicharito between two defenders about 10 yards out, and Chicharito settled the ball before taking a low shot from the top right of the 6-yard box that spun into the far side netting.
The Galaxy doubled their lead in the 42nd minute on a fluke goal. Vazquez’s cross from just outside the top right of the 18-yard box sailed over Frei and clanked off the far post and into the net.
Galaxy midfielder Riqui Puig, the 23-year-old signed from La Liga powerhouse Barcelona on August 4, made his MLS debut by coming on as a substitute in the 62nd minute.
