The host Los Angeles Galaxy and St. Louis City each extended their respective unbeaten streaks to four games in a back-and-forth 3–3 draw on Saturday, March 16.
Tomas Ostrak scored the first goal of the match for St. Louis (1–0–3, 6 points).
Dejan Joveljic extended his goal streak to four games for the Galaxy (1–0–3, 6 points).
Los Angeles took a 1–0 lead in the third minute thanks to Joveljic. Defender Julian Aude took a pass from Diego Fagundez into the box before passing to Joveljic in the area, where the Serbian sent it past goalkeeper Roman Burki’s left hand.
The Galaxy came close to doubling their lead in the 13th minute. Joseph Paintsil sent a pass to Riqui Puig, who fired an attempt from the top of the box but it hit the crossbar and stayed out of the net. Joveljic was there to collect the rebound, trying to convert on a header but that, too, hit the crossbar.
Though Los Angeles had its chances, it also struggled with giveaways, but St. Louis couldn’t convert.
St. Louis finally capitalized off a turnover in the 27th minute. Puig directed an attempt to push the ball ahead into Ostrak, who then ran up the middle before firing a strike from the area past John McCarthy’s left hand to tie it 1–1.
The Galaxy went ahead 2–1 in the 51st minute. Mark Delgado threaded a pass through two St. Louis defenders for Paintsil, who hustled to the ball before striking from the box.
Joveljic nearly had his second goal of the match three minutes later off a feed from Paintsil but was denied by a one-handed save by Burki.
In the 60th minute, St. Louis leveled it again off a corner. Joakim Nilsson converted on a bicycle kick from the top of the goal area to tie it 2–2.
The visitors took a 3–2 lead in the 88th minute on an own-goal by McCarthy off a St. Louis free kick. He came off his line into the goal area to try to catch the ball amid a crowd of players.
Maya Yoshida brought the Galaxy level when he got a piece of a Gaston Brugman free kick in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.
