Former Stanford football Coach David Shaw, who led the Cardinal to more victories than anyone in school history, on Thursday accepted a front-office job with the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

Shaw, 51, joins Broncos General Manager George Paton’s staff as a senior personnel executive. Shaw and Denver Coach Sean Payton were both on the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff in 1997.

At Stanford from 2011 until stepping down in 2022, Shaw became the only four-time Pacific-12 Conference coach of the year. A former wide receiver for the Cardinal, Shaw compiled a 96–54 coaching record at Stanford that included two Rose Bowl victories and eight consecutive bowl-game appearances from 2011–18.

Stanford produced 42 NFL draft picks during Shaw’s tenure, including six first-round selections. Quarterback Andrew Luck was the No. 1 overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2012, and current San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was the eighth overall selection by the Carolina Panthers in 2017.

In addition to working as a quality-control coach for the Eagles in 1997, Shaw’s NFL coaching experience includes stints as an assistant with the then-Oakland Raiders from 1998–2001 and the Baltimore Ravens from 2002–05.
