Chad Kelly, Released by Broncos After Arrest, Appears in Court

Chad Kelly, who was the Denver Broncos backup quarterback before being arrested on Oct. 23, appeared in court on Wednesday.

According to court records, a couple told police that a stranger came into their Englewood, Colorado home after 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

They said the intruder sat down on the couch next to the woman, who was holding the couple’s young child, and was “mumbling incoherently.”

The man yelled at the intruder to get out and hit him in the back with an aluminum tube from a vacuum. The homeowners showed police surveillance video of a man wearing dark pants, a white long sleeve shirt with a brown vest and a red scarf around his neck entering the front door.

“She was really, really scared,” the man, Marco Torres, told KDVR. “She was. She was with my son on the couch and he just walked in. He was there. She woke me up.”

The homeowner told police he thought the door was locked but police found no signs that someone had forced their way inside.

The Englewood Police Department said in a press release that officers responding to a call from the homeowner found the suspect, later identified as Kelly, sitting inside a black SUV in the area of the Gothic Theater.

Kelly, 24, was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespass.

Court Appearance and Release

Kelly’s appearance in court was brief, with the judge noting he'd met the $2,500 bond, scheduled his next court appearance for Nov. 8., reported KDVR.

Kelly was ordered to stay away from the family he’s accused of bothering. He stood silently next to his lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, during the hearing and declined to comment to reporters.

While Kelly was released from jail, he was also let go by the Broncos following the arrest. He was in his second year in the NFL, chosen with the final pick in the 2017 draft.

He is the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

“This was a decision that we made as an organization. After reviewing all the information and in talking with Vance (Joseph) and Joe (Ellis), we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do,” Broncos General Manager John Elway said in a statement.

“Even though Chad’s no longer part of our team, we’ve offered to help him however we can and are supportive of him in every possible way.”

Trouble

Kelly missed his rookie season while recovering from knee and wrist injuries, then beat out former first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch last summer to serve as the backup for starter Case Keenum.

He was frequently in trouble in college, getting kicked off the Clemson team in 2014 after arguing with coaches during the spring game. He also was arrested after a bar fight in 2014, eventually pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

In October 2016, he was involved in a brawl at his brother’s high school football game in New York. He ran onto the field after his brother, Casey Kelly, apparently took a late hit and video shows several coaches restraining him on the field.
