San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy wants to get his contract extension done without drama, he said.

Purdy has been playing on a rookie contract since being drafted with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. But he has been anything but for his team: since becoming the team’s full-time starter in 2022, Purdy led the 49ers to an appearance in the NFC Championship game in 2022 and a Super Bowl berth in 2023. With just one year remaining on his rookie deal, Purdy said on Monday that he wants to have a new deal in place before the 49ers’ offseason pick so he can get back to work with his teammates after a disappointing season.

“I want to obviously get it done,” Purdy said as the 49ers were cleaning out their lockers on Monday. “If [there is] an opportunity to be able to get that done quick, that‘d be great, just so we can get back for Phase One, get after it with the receivers and our team and just continue to grow, ’cause man, we’ve all got to grow together. We’ve got to come close and learn and just be the best versions of ourselves as fast as we can ... let’s roll, let’s get after this offseason together.”

The 49ers will be looking to regroup after a disappointing 2024 season. The defending NFC Champions went 6–11 this year. After starting 1–2, San Francisco recovered and leaped to a respectable 5–4 at the midpoint of the season, good for second place in the NFC West and firmly in the conversation for a potential playoff spot. But the 49ers lost three games in a row, including a 38–10 blowout to the Green Bay Packers, followed by a 35–10 blowout to the Buffalo Bills. Their 38–13 victory over the Chicago Bears was their last win of the season, as they closed the season on a four-game skid, losing to the Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, and Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy acknowledged that the timing is different for different players, but he wants to prioritize the team and winning games.

“I’m not the kind of guy that wants to have any kind of drama associated with anything,” he said. “I’m here for this organization, for my teammates in the locker room.

“I want to be very professional about it. We play professional football for our living, and I want to keep the main thing the main thing and not get distracted by all the chaos that can go on within it.”

Purdy said that trying to help his team was his focus during the offseason. He wants to help many of his teammates get new deals across the finish line. Some of the big names that are set to become free agents include: cornerback Charvarius Ward, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, guard Aaron Banks safety Talanoa Hufanga, and running back Jordan Mason.

Above all else, Purdy said he wants to remain a 49er for life.

“I want to be in San Francisco and play my football career here,” he said. “I love it here, and I want to do whatever it takes to be here. And so, we'll see when we get there, when we sit down and start talking and stuff but that’s first and foremost.

“I know that I’m the guy for this organization and that I can do what it takes to help lead us where we want to go, and I’m confident in that, so we'll see.”

Purdy was drafted out of Iowa State with the 262nd and final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, making him that year’s “Mr. Irrelevant.” He entered the season as the third quarterback behind 2021 third-overall pick Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, but after injuries to both, he took the reins of the offense and won all five starts to close out the season. He led the team to an appearance in the NFC Championship game but suffered a complete tear of the UCL in his right elbow early in the game and was forced to reenter the game when backup Josh Johnson left the game with a concussion, despite only being able to hand the ball off to running backs.

In 2023, Purdy led the 49ers for 16 of 17 games, throwing for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He led the team to Super Bowl LVIII but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. This season, Purdy threw for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.
