Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen delivered another MVP-worthy performance against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, and it has his teammates enamoured.
Allen is winning fans all over in the MVP chase. He completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns for a 95.3 quarterback rating, plus another 68 yards rushing with two touchdowns. That’s on the heels of his six-touchdown performance the week before against the Los Angeles Rams (8–6), which was after his 95.4 quarterback rating in a snowy win at home against the San Francisco 49ers (6–8) on Dec. 1. Allen’s performances had national media outlets talking about his strong MVP chances all morning on Monday.
“The dude’s incredible,” Bills tight end Dawson Knox told reporters afterward. “It’s hard to describe what he does on a consistent basis every single Sunday.
“I’ve talked about it before, but sometimes you just turn into a fan. I mean he threw a chest pass touchdown … (but) got called back but he’s flipping the ball to guys, making plays with his feet. I’m yelling in my head to slide, but he’s running guys over.”
Allen is competing against another quarterback known for running in the MVP race—Baltimore Ravens superstar Lamar Jackson. Jackson has won the award twice but his team’s losses to the Philadelphia Eagles (12–2) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (10–4) over the past month could hurt his case. Allen meanwhile took his team (11–3) into the den of the league’s hottest team and won while putting up 48 points on Sunday.
“Man, Josh is the best player in the league,” Bills cornerback Taron Johnson told reporters afterward. “So having that, I mean, it’s special. I truly feel like he’s unstoppable, and having a quarterback like that is extremely helpful for us.”
Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman, who caught a 64-yard pass from Allen, considered his quarterback’s high level of play routine. Coleman added that he couldn’t see the hit that Allen endured as he delivered the ball.
“I’m the one trying to make the catch, so now, I’m not amazed at this point, and that’s kind of just what he [does],” Coleman told reporters afterward.
Dawkins acknowledged it’s a routine expectation to score a touchdown each time they’re on offense. He also expressed that having a quarterback like Allen gets him motivated in the trenches.
“I’m honored to be his left tackle,” Dawkins said. “You know, I’m honored to be the best for him.”
Knox called it “so much fun to play with” Allen.
“It’s really a privilege, and I hope to get to play with him as long as I possibly can,” Dawkins said.
