Tuesday’s scheduled game between the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York was postponed due to a forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The teams will attempt to open their three-game series by playing a traditional doubleheader beginning at 4:05 p.m. ET Wednesday. The postponement was announced about three hours before the scheduled first pitch after a flood watch was issued earlier in the day for New York.
The Yankees plan to start right-hander Luis Gil (11–5, 3.20 earned-run average) against Angels right-hander Davis Daniel (1–2, 4.91) in the opener. Both are rookies. The second game is set to feature Yankees right-hander Will Warren (0–0, 6.75), making his second career start, opposite Angels right-hander Carson Fulmer (0–2, 3.69).
The Yankees have won seven of their past eight games, after a 10–23 slide from June 15–July 26. They took two of three at home from the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend. Aaron Judge hit his major-league-best 40th and 41st home runs in the first two games of the series before being intentionally walked three times Sunday.
The Angels are 12–9 in their past 21 games and took two of three at home from the New York Mets over weekend.
Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon had been scheduled to return to the lineup Tuesday after having been removed from the 10-day injured list. The oft-injured Rendon had gone on the IL on July 30, retroactive to July 27, after he missed two games against the Oakland Athletics because of low-back inflammation.
The Angels placed outfielder Taylor Ward, 30, on the paternity list Tuesday. He can miss a maximum of three days.
Also Tuesday, Angels infielder Luis Rengifo underwent season-ending surgery on his right wrist. He was placed on the 10-day IL on Saturday, and further tests showed he needed surgery. The team said he is expected to be ready for spring training next season.
Rendon, 34, has appeared in only 33 games this season. He missed 2 1/2 months because of a hamstring strain, returning in early July to play 14 games before his latest IL stint, which was the minimum 10 days. He has no homers, six RBIs, and a .227 batting average this year.
Since joining the Angels in December 2019 on a seven-year, $245 million deal, Rendon has never played more than 58 games in a season. After hitting .290 with 136 homers and 546 RBIs in 916 games for the Washington Nationals from 2013–19, he is batting .245 with 22 homers and 117 RBIs in 233 games for Los Angeles.
Rengifo, 27, was removed from a July 31 game against the Colorado Rockies due to a wrist flare-up, then sat out the following day. He returned to the lineup on Friday against the Mets but exited after four innings due to wrist inflammation.
Rengifo spent nearly three weeks on the IL after he first injured his wrist on July 3. Rengifo was batting .315 before the initial wrist injury. He returned to action 20 days later and has since gone 6-for-32 (.188) in nine games with his average falling 15 points.
In 78 games this season, Rengifo hit .300 with six home runs and 30 RBIs. Over six seasons (526 games) with the Angels, Rengifo is a .253 hitter with 53 home runs and 187 RBIs.
