Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown says the offense needs to take another step forward after their Super Bowl win.

The Eagles announced Wednesday that they had promoted passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator to replace Kellen Moore, who was hired as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints following the Eagles’ victory in Super Bowl LIX. In an interview with NFL Network on Thursday, Brown said the offense needs to evolve in order to maintain the success the team had.

“For our fans, they need to understand everything has to change,” Brown said. “I know we just won, but it has to change. We have to get better, and we have to do things different. But I truly feel like it’s a great hire. He already has been involved in almost everything. Him, Kellen, and [Head Coach] Nick [Sirianni] basically called the plays already.”

Patullo has some experience with Sirianni. He served as wide receivers coach for the Indianapolis Colts when Sirianni was offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2020. Patullo was then assigned as pass game specialist in 2020. When Sirianni was hired as head coach of the Eagles, he followed Sirianni and served as pass game coordinator, first under offensive coordinator Shane Steichen from 2021 to 2022, Brian Johnson in 2023, and Moore in 2024.

Sirianni touted his rapport with Patullo when the team announced the hire. “[He is] very important to the success that we’ve had,” the head coach stated, via the team’s official website. “He wears a lot of different hats. Helps me a lot with different head coaching things. I can’t tell you that I make a decision without saying to Kevin first, ‘What do you think?’ That’s in everything. That’s in-game, out of game, with scheduling, that’s with offensive stuff, that’s with game-management stuff, I lean on him a lot. ”

“That continuity is really important because he knows what I’m thinking in certain situations, how you want things to be taught, all of those different things, so he’s been a great resource for me the entire time, our success this year, but really the success we’ve had since we’ve been here. Can’t be great without the greatness of others and that is definitely a fact with Kevin Patullo and I trust him with everything. Got a ton of trust and faith with him. He’s awesome.”

Patullo’s hiring could also put the focus back on the passing game. This season, the Eagles ranked second in the NFL in both  rushing yards and rushing touchdowns as a team. That success, especially running back Saquon Barkley’s historic season, was critical to the team’s 14–3 record and playoff run. But the focus on running the ball came at the expense of the pass game. The Eagles ranked 30th in passing yards as a team and 12th in passing touchdowns.

Brown’s statistics dropped off during the playoff run. He caught just three passes for 24 yards during the Wild Card and Divisional Round games. He attributed the struggles and the team’s anemic passing attack to bad weather in Philadelphia both weeks. His stats did climb again somewhat: He caught six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown in the NFC Championship game, and had three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Brown said that evolving the offense is necessary if Philadelphia wants to defend its championship.

“It has to change; it has to evolve,” Brown said. “I don’t know what wrinkles would look like, but we have to find ways to get better, you know? It’s a lot of fame out there on us—we just won—and guys are gonna be coming at us. We’re not the hunting anymore, we’re the hunted, and we have to get better.”

Patullo agrees with Brown. “Around the league, the offenses are kind of evolving every year and so as a coach, that’s your job,” he said in an interview during the week before the Super Bowl, via the team’s website. “You have to evolve. You have to study other people and take what you like and past experiences and go from there.”
