SEATTLE—Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company gave its March 29 performance at Seattle’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall to enthusiastic response. Nat McCully, a senior manager with a major software company, said he enjoyed seeing China’s history and culture through the performance.

“It’s very interesting to see the Chinese history, creative dance, and the different regions of China,” he said. “It’s culturally interesting.”

Mr. McCully practices the traditional Japanese martial art Aikido, has lived in the East, and has knows more about Asian culture and history than the average Westerner. He proposed to Elizabeth McCully in Hong Kong, according to their wedding website.

He liked seeing the dances that represent different ethnic groups and historic periods, he said. Seeing “the Yi people or the soldiers from the Tang dynasty—it’s interesting to imagine what the time was like back 1,000 years ago,” he said.

According to its website, New York-based Shen Yun is bringing back China’s 5,000 year old culture through “breathtaking music and dance.”

“Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” reads the Shen Yun website.

Mrs. McCully said she also enjoyed the performance, and said the choreography in the dances is impressive.

The dances are so difficult to perform, yet Shen Yun dancers “make it look easy,” she said.
