The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s or 40s, wearing a black hoodie, with pale skin and blue eyes.
The shooting occurred on the E. Sam Houston Pkwy service road at Wallisville Road as the family was heading to a store.
The suspect had previously been described by authorities as having a beard, but Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a news conference that additional information received by investigators made them realize the suspect had more of a “five o'clock shadow.”
Authorities on Thursday also released a short video of what they believe is the red truck the suspect drove.
“We’re not gonna rest until we find justice for Jazmine,” Gonzalez said. He previously said that five people witnessed the murder, calling it “so senseless.”
Gonzalez said authorities have not yet determined a motive in Sunday’s shooting while LaPorsha Washington, Barnes’ mother, at a separate press conference implored the shooter to turn himself in.
“His conscience is finally going to get to him after he sees my child’s face go across (television screens) so many times. He’s going to turn himself in,” Washington said. “Do the right thing.”
A $100,000 reward is being offered for a tip that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information was urged to call Crime Stoppers Houston at 713-222-TIPS or 713-221-6000.
Jazmine’s death has prompted an outpouring of support for her family from people, celebrities and sports stars across the country. On Thursday, Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins tweeted that he would donate his check from Saturday’s NFL Wild Card playoff game to help pay for Jazmine’s funeral costs. Her funeral is on Tuesday.
Mom Recalls Daughter’s Last Moments
Washington said in late December that she remembers the moments leading up to the shooting.“They sped off in front of us and the truck slowed down and continued to fire as he was in front of us. It was not fair. It was not fair. He intentionally killed my child for no reason. He didn’t even know her, he didn’t know who she was.”
After the shooting, Washington’s other daughters noticed Jazmine was unresponsive.
“She said, ‘Momma, Jazmine’s not moving. She’s not talking.’ I turned around and my 7-year-old was shot in the head,” she recalled.
“I ask that family or friends that are able too please help and find it in yall heart to donate to this go fund me to help with any expenses that our family may need during this tragedy,” he wrote. “Rest In Heaven Jazmine our beautiful princess we love you and miss you!”
