SAN JOSE, Calif.—Shen Yun Performing Arts delighted the audience with an all-new production at the Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 30. Andrew and Doria Harvey attended the performance with their daughter, Sasha.

Doria, an embryologist, learned of the performance via advertisements. “Your amazing marketing—it’s everywhere. I’ve seen it everywhere for the past five years, and eventually, I’m like, okay, I’ve got to go and see [the performance],” she said.

Andrew, a software engineer from Scotland, said when asked about Shen Yun, he thought it was a wonderful escape from the everyday world.

“You go in that room, and it goes dark, and you’re focused entirely on the stage and the dancers and the music,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to escape from everything else. I’ve been very moved by it. I really enjoy it.”

When the curtains go down, the first feeling Doria had was “Happy. It’s beautiful. The colors are just so moving. Yeah, I love it. Yes, I enjoy the colors.”

The entire experience moved Andrew. “Just coming into the venue here, the first thing that hits me is also just the nice smells in the air. Everyone’s done up nicely. You know, they’ve got their perfume, their aftershave on. It’s just this little touch. You come in, it’s just like a bubble from everything else outside,” he said.

Andrew expressed his appreciation for seeing Shen Yun, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Based in New York, its artists are dedicated to reviving China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

“It’s just a nice glimpse into Chinese traditional dance and culture,” he said.

Presenting a brand-new set of dance pieces, musical compositions, and solo performances each season, the company takes its audience on a journey through time and space to rediscover the beauty and traditional values of pre-communist China. Shen Yun is banned from performing in China.

“I’m feeling just so fortunate that we live here and that we have experiences like this to go to, and our daughter Sasha can see it as well,“ Andrew said. ”You know, this is actually very rare, you know, to have these opportunities. Most people don’t get these opportunities.”

“As we have learned today,” Doria added.

Danielle Roberts, who works in customer relations for a tech company, was impressed by Shen Yun. “It is stunning. The costumes are incredible, and the dancing is amazing. I’m just really enjoying it. It’s awesome,” she said.

“I think all of it is very impactful so far. The colors of the women’s costumes so far are gorgeous. The flowing sleeves and the dresses, it’s just, all of it’s amazing,” she said.

Ms. Roberts sat close to the front and enjoyed the live music of the orchestra. “The orchestra is right there, and it’s perfection,” she said.

Shen Yun’s artists are dedicated to reviving China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Ms. Roberts responded to such a purpose. “I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s a great way to do it because I feel that music and dance are universal to a lot of people. I think it’s a great way to spread a message.”
