COSTA MESA, Calif.—Robert Harrell admits he didn’t know what to expect when he came to watch Shen Yun, but knew he wanted to experience it after seeing ads on Facebook.

“I’m really, I’m kind of amazed because I didn’t know what to expect,” Mr. Harrell, a car dealer, said after watching Shen Yun in Costa Mesa’s Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Saturday evening for the first time.

Mr. Harrell said the athleticism and acrobatics left him stunned.

“I don’t know how they do what they do. But it’s great.”

Alongside the performers, Mr. Harrell said the digital backdrop was unbelievable.

“The way you think of those guys go up into the (screen), everything about it. It’s just, it’s hard to describe. You have to see it to believe it.”

Shen Yun’s one-of-a-kind digital backdrop interacts with the dancers, who appear to jump in and out of the background in sync with the music and story.

Mr. Harrell, who came to the show with three friends, said he enjoyed all aspects of the show.

“It’s very informative. And it’s just sad to see that happen, and that was a time that existed. And now it’s been wiped away by the communists. Yes, just a sad version. Because they’ve got thousands of years of history. And that’s what I’m most impressed about.”

New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, or “China before communism,” through music and dance.
