NEW YORK—Jean Pantina, vice president of a multinational financial firm, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at The David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on April 5.
“I really, really enjoyed it,” said Mrs. Pantina. “Especially the colors and all the movements and the stories and the music, [as well as the ] timing, how they were in time. And it was funny at times, and it was serious too.”
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has been the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company since its inception in 2006. Its performers come from all around the world, united in their mission to revive traditional Chinese culture and the beauty and goodness of China before communism. Shen Yun currently has eight equally sized companies that tour the world simultaneously, delighting audiences in over 200 cities across more than 20 countries and spanning five continents.
Shen Yun’s patented animated backdrop, which allows performers to move seamlessly between the stage and background, delighted Mrs. Pantina, who said that the performance exceeded her expectations because “they blended the technology into it, and it was amazing when the screen came to life. It enhanced it.”
Mrs. Pantina’s husband, James Pantina, watched the performance as well.
“I thought it was terrific,” he said. “I thought it was elegant. I loved the colors. I loved the ... elegance of the women [and] the femininity. I loved the powerfulness of the men. The special effects were terrific. The choreography was great. The timing was outstanding. And the orchestra was beyond great.”
Mrs. Pantina said that through Shen Yun, she learned about traditional Chinese culture and its influence on other parts of the world.
“It really told of the tradition,” she said. “I was surprised to learn that ... acrobatics came from the dancing. I thought it was the other way around.”
Shen Yun also depicts the close connection the ancient Chinese, who believed their culture came from the heavens, had with the divine. Mrs. Pantina said that while she had not been expecting to see these spiritual elements, she thought it was well presented.
