UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill.—Voice teacher Keith Bertrand found Shen Yun Performing Arts excellent in its artistry and execution, seeing it at the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University on April 11.

“Beautiful show. Amazing dancing. The physical capabilities are amazing. Costumes are stunning. And they’re so fluid. I love the way they use material to really kind of accentuate the moves they’re making. Oh, it’s just wonderful. I love it,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

Mr. Bertrand also works in audio, building headphones. He found an interesting sound in Shen Yun, whose orchestra is unique in the world for permanently combining ancient Chinese instruments into an otherwise classical orchestra.

“I love the traditional instruments. Love the sound. It just feels like it’s just a historical sound. You know, you can’t go anywhere and hear that sound of those instruments. And so it’s really cool to hear the traditional old Chinese instruments that you don’t hear around anymore,” he said.
Mr. Bertrand also loved how the orchestra created sound effects that matched perfectly with what was happening on stage between the dancers and the digital backdrop.

“Very, very good. I like the interesting how they tie in the animations and the sound from that with the animation and the orchestra,” he said. “That’s very, very good.”

Mr. Bertrand said there was also a spiritual aspect to the culture and performance that he enjoyed.

“It kind of ties a lot of different things together throughout the whole show,” he said. Indeed, traditional Chinese culture is known as a divinely inspired culture, which the Chinese considered a gift from the heavens, and Mr. Bertrand said this was a theme that all viewers might be able to relate to.

“There’s a connection there between the earth and the heavens and just a spirituality that is kind of universal for everybody,” Mr. Bertrand said.
