TUCSON, Ariz.—Sitting in the audience of Shen Yun Performing Arts, photographer Vance Thompson was itching to pick up a camera.

“I waited four years to see this production, and as a professional photographer, I really, really enjoyed watching the show, and the colors were just absolutely phenomenal. I loved it,” he said after seeing the performance at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall on Feb. 8.

“One day, I would like to meet the cast or some of them,” he added. “I would love to actually be the person who films the production ...  I would love to be able to photograph the event and do that kind of stuff, that would be awesome for me.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to show audiences “China before communism.”
Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, and has become known worldwide for its artistry and innovative production. Audiences often speak of the colors like they’ve never seen before, as used in the couture costumes and animated backdrop of Shen Yun’s own design, or of ancient instruments they’ve never heard before in Shen Yun’s unique orchestra blending East and West.

“This, to me, is visually stunning for me. That’s absolutely wonderful,” Mr. Thompson said.

Mr. Thompson said he has always been interested in Chinese culture and in performing arts, and Shen Yun had presented him with an opportunity to experience both of these loves.

“This gave me an opportunity not only to see the dance, but to get to understand, you know, what happened before, what’s happening now, and hopefully what may change in the future,” he said.
