OXFORD, UK—Steve and Ally Butler saw Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time on Jan. 24 at the New Theatre in Oxford and left amazed.
“Dancing’s just incredible. It’s beautiful colors, and you can see how well they’ve worked, and it’s just really amazing,” said Mrs. Butler, a nurse.
“Absolutely amazing to watch,” said Mr. Butler, a consultant, in agreement. “Absolutely amazing.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun has a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization—China before communism.
Mrs. Butler said she thought it was an important mission, and she was impressed.
“I think it’s really amazing, and it’s really important,” she said. “Culturally, I’m sure that that’s really valuable for people.”
The Butlers said they thought it was “a shame” that Shen Yun could not perform in China. Since the Chinese Communist regime took power in 1949, it has sought to destroy traditional Chinese culture through periodic violent campaigns such as the Cultural Revolution.
As Christians, the Butlers said many things they saw in the divinely inspired culture of ancient China, resonated with them as universal themes and values.
Also in the audience on Jan. 24 were Rozzi Jennings, entrepreneur, and Laurence Jennings, firefighter, and they felt transported by the 5,000-year journey Shen Yun presented through art.
“The dancers are spectacular. They’re flawless. The performance is completely flawless. It’s so colorful, so vibrant, and it’s just beautiful,” said Mrs. Jennings.
“It’s very exciting for the senses. It really feels like it transports you into China. You can learn about China and the culture and all these different elements and the music as well; the live orchestra [members] are just flawless again, perfect. You can tell that they’ve worked very hard to get to this level.”
Mr. Jennings agreed, cheering Shen Yun on in their mission.
“Please, please keep reviving it,” he said. “It’s a wonderful culture, and we wouldn’t want to lose it.”
