The audiences at Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, California, were deeply moved by Shen Yun Performing Arts after its performances on April 24 and 25. The classical Chinese dance company aims to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture and values, showcasing the beauty of “China before communism.”

“I was in tears. I was absolutely in tears because it was amazing,” said Wendy Dawson, a healthcare manager.

“Our old culture means so much more because it’s our history, and we have to embrace that history, and we have to make sure that that history is solidified and recognized, and that’s what’s so beautiful about this,” she said.

“Everything’s much more disciplined than Western culture in certain aspects ...  but it’s just a very ancient culture. It’s full of beauty, wisdom, and I think we can learn a lot from older cultures,” said Nancy Roettger, a business owner.

Shen Yun travels with a live orchestra that combines both classical Chinese instruments and Western instruments. The soprano singer also received high praise from the audience.

“She portrayed such a beautiful countenance and I don’t think I saw a microphone, so she was very projective with her song. It was beautiful,” said Nancy Sierra, a marketing and events director. “All of the music locality was just wonderful, and it portrayed so many different emotions ... It was beautiful.”

“She sang like an angel. And it was just really beautiful, very touching,” said Aaron Watene, a musician.

He felt there was a deeper message from the performance.

“A message of hope, and perseverance, and of keeping going,” said Mr. Watene. “The feeling of empowerment and feeling like happiness as well, it makes me feel joy.”

Ancient Chinese people believed their culture and values to be inspired by the Divine. Shen Yun showcases them through traditional dance, music, and stories in front of an innovative interactive backdrop.

“It was just so amazing. The performance, the artwork, everything was so beautiful. And I was so appreciative of all the people and the way that it was presented to all of us, and we had such an amazing time. So I’m so appreciative,” said Ms. Dawson.

“That was amazing, the 3D backdrop. Every time they would step into the picture, everyone around us, we were like, ‘Wow, that’s really neat.’ How it looked so real, how they step into the picture and fly away and then come pop back up. So I really enjoyed that,” said Ms. Roettger.

“It was conveyed very well. Even the narration that took place, it was very good. There was humor, seriousness, so many different emotions,” said Renee Molina, a clinical research auditor.

Shen Yun will be performing at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo, California, on April 29 and 30.
