NEWARK, N.J.—Bob LaCorte and Chuck LaCorte are brothers who decided to share an afternoon with each other, enjoying the beauty of Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“I’m learning a lot about the culture. I’m learning a lot. We were just talking about it, and it’s a shame that they have to remember their history. You can’t forget about the history and just worry about the present,” said Bob, a retired manager.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
“It’s amazing, 5,000 years old. This country [U.S.] has only been in existence for 300 years. We’re talking 5,000, which is unbelievable,” said Chuck, who used to work in operations and finance.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“I think the show is fantastic. ... They dance with a lot of heart,” said Bob, who added that the dancers seemed to get stronger as the performance went on.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“I love the background pictures,” said Bob.

Bob and his wife shared that their kids would love Shen Yun if they saw it and that Shen Yun’s beautiful backdrops would have their son flying to China to see the beautiful mountains in person.

“When I see this, I would love to visit that country. It’s absolutely gorgeous,” Chuck said.

Although China was once known as the land of the divine, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s ideology is rooted in Marxism. Shen Yun’s truthful depiction of present-day China has made it impossible for Shen Yun to perform in China.

Bob expressed that he is glad for Shen Yun to be “allowed to express, [Chinese] history, culture and things that they might not be able to really express [in China].”
