HOUSTON—Scott and Nicole Gleason, who both work in the banking software field, had wanted to see Shen Yun Performing Arts for “at least a decade,” Mr. Gleason said, but it was only this year that their schedules aligned. The couple were happy to finally have the chance to do so at the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center on Feb. 16.

“It’s absolutely beautiful. The performers—they just are so graceful. I actually really love the interactive screen in the back. I understand that’s unique to the show,” said Mr. Gleason. “It’s very, very fun.”

Mrs. Gleason said they had so loved the costumes that after the performance they were looking at the gift shop stands, hoping to find something with sleeves similar to what they had seen on stage.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“Oh, it’s beautiful. It’s very moving, very touching, and very moving,” said Mrs. Gleason. “I love it. And sometimes one of the stories I just watched makes you, makes you want to cry.”

Mrs. Gleason described several stories that tugged on her heartstrings, including a well-known Chinese myth about star-crossed lovers, and a story based on true events set in modern China that showed people who hold on to tradition and faith despite persecution by the Chinese communist regime.

Mr. Gleason added that all these stories were conveyed without needing any words.
“You can understand it through just dancing. And that’s very, that’s very unique,” Mrs. Gleason added.
The couple also enjoyed the heavenly depictions in some of the story-based dances, and appreciated learning that traditional Chinese culture is a divinely inspired culture. That belief resonated with the couple.

“It’s beautiful. It’s great. I mean, it’s nice to see that still as part of the old tradition kind of coming through, so that people can see that and appreciate that,” said Mr. Gleason.

“If you do something good, someone always up there taking care of you,” Mrs. Gleason added.

Having finally experienced Shen Yun firsthand, the couple said they would absolutely recommend others do the same.

“We would see again. I recommend everybody should come and see even if you don’t understand it, you can still see it in the movement of the dancing,” Mrs. Gleason said.
