DALLAS, Texas—Distance matters less when the goal is worth it. Many audience members are willing to travel long distances to experience Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“We’re from Montana, so we flew down to see it tonight,” said Nathan Garber, who works in real estate.

Shen Yun is based in New York and is dedicated to presenting a true China before communism using classical Chinese dance and music.

“I love to see other cultures and understand where people come from. Sometimes, in America today, we can lose sight of who the Chinese people are, because we see what the Chinese government does that we don’t appreciate. And so it helps to differentiate that the Chinese people are not the Chinese government as such. And so that was very helpful to me,” said Mr. Garber.

China has 5,000 years of history and only in the last century did communism take control. Shen Yun is here to remind the world that China should not be defined by its current government.
“What surprised me the most was I had no idea it’s not just a show to help people understand who the Chinese people are, what it was like before communism, but in fact, that it’s about making people aware of the needs and what’s happening right now today,” said Mr. Garber.
Shen Yun draws from the myths and legends of China to create its all-new production each year. Yet the message that the good will be rewarded and the evil will be punished will never change.

“And so understanding that, knowing that, watching this, made it more meaningful to me as well. And so I was thinking about how I’m going to go encourage other people to watch it, because I think the more people that see it, the greater the impact will then be for a force for good,” said Mr. Garber.

One of the dances told the true story of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted for their steadfast faith. Falun Gong teaches people to follow the principles of truth, compassion, and forbearance.

“The scene—they demonstrate the persecution today. That was hard to watch, and just to really understand again, we don’t think about it here in America,” said commented Mr. Garber.

China has always been a spiritual place. Many of Shen Yun’s dances portray the people and their interactions with the divine.

“I’m very spiritual myself, and so I appreciate the whole spiritual thread throughout the show, for sure. And thank you to everybody who worked hard to put this on,” expressed Mr. Garber. “I love[d] the angels the most and the dancers with the magenta.”
