TAIPEI, Taiwan—A Taiwanese cellist and concertgoer who began her musical training when she was little, had a unique experience on Oct. 3, unlike any other. She walked away with both regrets and a realization.
Cellist Luo Rui-rong said she had tears in eyes during the whole concert of Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra at Zhongshan Hall in Taipei.
The orchestra had the power to bring her to see the depth and beauty of life, she said. She appreciated and felt blessed to be able to see such a magnificent symphony orchestra.
“I felt mentally elevated, spiritually enriched, and what’s more, I will really have more passion for life from today on,” she said.
With all her excitement and newfound appreciation of life, Ms. Luo said she did have some regrets. She felt it was a great pity that her children and other family members did not attend the concert with her. She expressed her desire to share with her family the touching feelings which could not be transmitted with words.
The climaxes of the performance for Ms. Luo were at the very beginning of the concert and at the end.
She said the beauty of the two pieces touched the core of her soul through the tender sound of the string instruments. She felt the positive energy emitted from the performance cleansed her soul.
Western and Chinese Instruments
Ms. Luo thought the music produced by the combination of the Western and Chinese instruments was beautiful and harmonious. One of the most unique features of Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is its blending Eastern and Western musical traditions. It creates all-original Chinese melodies inspired by 5,000 years of Chinese culture by accentuating the beauty of ancient Chinese instruments with the power of the Western symphony orchestra, according to its website.
She was particularly impressed by the violin soloist. “The sound is really beautiful. It’s full and round. The sound is rich and substantial, able to transmit the beauty of the instrument.”
She added, “I think her violin must be the paragon of violins.”
She most loved the two-stringed Chinese instrument, the erhu, however.
Having a history of more than 4,000 years, the erhu is one of the most important Chinese instruments. It can convey a wide range of emotions and produce a variety of sounds with just two strings, notes the Shen Yun website.
The erhu, according to Ms. Luo, can produce the most beautiful sound among all instruments. She believed that the sound of erhu can bring one’s heart to serenity and makes one forget all the cares of the mundane world.
Soul of the Symphony Orchestra
After praising the musicians, Ms. Luo saluted the conductor, the soul of the orchestra.“The conductor is even better,” she acclaimed. “He is ingenious beyond description.”
As a musician herself, Ms. Luo really admired the conductor for having such a vigorous momentum to direct such a magnificent performance.
“It’s very hard and rare for a conductor to attend to each and every aspect while conducting a symphony orchestra,” she explained. “And he also controlled the atmosphere of the entire concert very well.”
Last, Ms. Luo advised people, especially the younger generation, to see Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra.
“The positive energy transmitted in the concert is what everyone needs most nowadays.”
