SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Chinese culture is five millennia old and Shen Yun Performing Arts has been dedicated to reviving the beauty of Chinese culture for nearly two decades.

“The dedication to keeping the culture alive and teaching the next generation and other people about it—I think that struck a strong chord with me because I know with my culture, I want to do the same. And I saw a lot of messages about grace, hope, kindness, and loyalty in the divine, so I saw all those things in there and enjoyed it very much,” said David Alford, who works in business.

Shen Yun is based in New York and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed the cultural dancing. I know a lot of American cultural dancing, so it was really cool to see the different groups dance and, honestly, how a lot of it was related. I could see a lot of parallels between American culture and European culture, too,” Mr. Alford said.

Shen Yun artists aren’t only adept at classical Chinese dance but also various Chinese ethnic and folk dance styles such as Tibetan or Yi.

“I thought it was very entertaining, and I thought it was a good representation of a culture that I don’t know much about, so I was happy to watch,” Mr. Alford said.

Mr. Alford shared that he enjoyed dances from both the men and women, particularly “The Golden Peacock” and “Water Sleeves.”

China was once known as the land of the divine but after the Cultural Revolution, tradition and customs were systematically destroyed and distorted. The Chinese Communist Party stifled self-expression and other basic human rights.

“I understand that struggle: of people wanting to do more, be better, but being in an environment where sometimes that is hard to do,” Mr. Alford expressed.
