NEW YORK CITY—Martin Bauman appreciates Chinese culture and art, and was delighted with what he found in Shen Yun Performing Arts.
“I think the dance is spectacular. I think the artists are just great, the scenery is great, everything about it is,” Mr. Bauman, who works in finance, said seeing Shen Yun at Lincoln Center on April 9.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s leading classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.
“It’s fun to see Chinese history and art here,” said Mr. Bauman, who has travelled across Asia. “I think it’s very important to see the history of China and understand what China was like through all the years.”

Another art lover in the audience was Ken Ciuffreda, who has collected Chinese art and attended private concerts with ancient Chinese music. He was delighted to find ancient Chinese instruments incorporated into Shen Yun’s orchestra, and to discover Shen Yun’s mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
“It’s a real pleasure. I’m retired, but I still do research,” said Mr. Ciuffreda, a retired eye doctor who keeps up his interest in Chinese art and culture. “I think it shows a unique perspective of Chinese culture and the beauty of the culture and the beauty of the music and dance.”
“The colors are fantastic and the stories are very interesting. The cultural aspects of it and the music, of course, like the pipa, which I actually had one before ... the whole show is very fascinating,” he said.
“You have to maintain tradition. You have to understand the past to understand the present and predict the future. So you can’t wipe out tradition. Tradition is here to stay. It’s been in the United States for almost 300 years. It’s been in China for thousands of years. So tradition is extremely important,” he said.
