EL PASO, Texas—Eric and Kathleen Kendall did not know what kind of China they might see on stage when they attended Shen Yun Performing Arts, billed as a performance of “China before communism.”

The experience was beautiful, immersive, and enlightening for the Kendalls, as they shared at the Plaza Theatre during the intermission of the matinee performance on Feb. 24.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Ms. Kendall, a doctor, turning appreciative and wanting to share her thanks with the artists. “It’s wonderful to share this part of Chinese culture with us. Thank you so much. ... Thank you so much for your beautiful hard work and your lovely grace.”
She had high praise for the beauty of the choreography and costumes and the effort all the artists put in.

“You can tell there’s a lot of thought and a lot of energy, positive energy that goes into The performers and the choreography, and it’s just very well done,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company and has, since its inception in 2006, become a global phenomenon. For thousands of years, Chinese culture was said to be divinely inspired, and Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
Mr. Kendall, a surgeon, said he hadn’t realized there was so much in Chinese culture pre-communism.

“I think it’s wonderful that we get to see it,” he said. “So really lovely, really glad we came.”
