LONDON—From the music to the colors to the spirituality, music teachers Anusha and Weerasiri Malwatta found much resonated with them in Shen Yun Performing Arts.
“Thank God, it’s amazing ... perfect, marvelous,” said Mrs. Anusha Malwatta after seeing a performance at the Eventim Apollo.
Mr. Weerasiri Malwatta said that listening to the music of Shen Yun—original compositions that make use of ancient Chinese melodies—he felt “very free” and fantastic.
“Music, dancing, everything [is] fantastic,” he added.
Originally from Sri Lanka, the couple also teach traditional music, and Mr. Malwatta added his appreciation for the ancient Chinese instruments featured in Shen Yun’s performance. An erhu virtuoso had also given a solo performance, inspiring the two music teachers.
“We work very hard, and after that it gives a like a meditation,” she said.
Mrs. Malwatta said she had to make special mention of the costumes, which are designed anew for each season’s production and inspired by the traditional dress of China’s dynasties or ethnic minorities and regions.
The costumes were beautiful and flawless, Mrs. Malwatta said, and the use of color was perfect.
“Excellent, excellent performance,” Mrs. Malwatta said. “I have no words to tell.”
Also inspired by the beauty of Shen Yun’s performance were jewelry designer Julia Malinovskiy and her husband Dmitriy Malinovskiy, a finance director.
“I love the light, and the colors of the outfits; it’s pretty amazing how it all resonates with the music, with the movements,” said Mr. Malinovskiy.
“Like it’s above expectations,” he said, explaining the couple frequent the theater and have seen many forms of dance. “It’s simply ‘wow.’”
