This Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 11-12, marks the first time that Shen Yun Performing Arts will visit Lansing, Mich. The famous traditional Chinese music and dance company will find an appropriate venue in the stunning Wharton Center for Performing Arts located on Michigan State’s campus.
Shen Yun brings to life legends and historical events from 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. These stories demonstrate the values of propriety, compassion, and courage that have sustained Chinese society for thousands of years but have been all but lost in China today.
Shen Yun’s stories are depicted through classical Chinese dance, one of the most expressive and demanding dance systems in the world, and are accompanied by an orchestra that blends Eastern and Western musical traditions, by beautiful costumes, and by an animated backdrop that interacts with the performers.
The company just finished a run in Detroit, where the audiences were thrilled. Karolyn Leibovitz veteran dance instructor, who holds a degree in ballet, said, “The skill level is beyond anything imaginable.”
Dentist Steve Gustafson enjoyed the dancing and “liked the way it told me the history of China through the different decades and different dynasties. And it gave me an interesting perspective on the culture of China.”
Historian Paul Lee believes that Shen Yun has “an awesome regard for Chinese history, for its scope and its depth and also its contribution to world culture.”
Trisha Vanwormer, a general manager of a Banana Republic store, thought “It was gorgeous—I mean gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous … It’s just something you don’t see every day.”
As a global phenomenon, this year Shen Yun has four touring companies traveling through North America, South America, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific region.
