MISSISSAUGA, Canada—The intrinsic excellence of the highly polished performance put on by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga on April 27 was not lost on lawyer Mike Weinczok.

“It just feels good to watch people do something really well,” he said, adding that he felt enlightened and “a lot more knowledgeable about Chinese history” after seeing the show.

“It was great. It was very entertaining and very cultural and we learned a lot about China, so it was very interesting for us.”

Shen Yun depicts ancient China’s traditional culture through live orchestral music and classical Chinese dance—an athletic but graceful art form passed down and refined over the ages.

“It was wonderful,” Mr. Weinczok said of the dancers. “They were beautiful, poetic, and athletic at the same time, so it was really interesting.”

He also appreciated Shen Yun’s signature animated backdrop, which interacts with some of the dance pieces to enhance the storytelling.

“It was very interesting, I loved the way they made the transition from the screen to the dancers,” he said.

Shen Yun was formed in 2006 by overseas Chinese artists who had the wish to revive the essence of China’s ancient culture, which was all but destroyed after communism took hold in the country.

Mr. Weinczok said he feels this mission is being achieved by Shen Yun.

“I think they did a wonderful job. I didn’t know 90 percent of what I just learned tonight, so it was really good.”
