INDIANAPOLIS—Like most audience members, Bob and Marsha Zeller were hard-pressed to name a favorite or one particular thing most impressive in Shen Yun Performing Arts, finding every aspect of the performance amazing and adding something special to the experience.

“The visual was stupendous. Really got your attention, and I really enjoyed it. And the orchestra was excellent as well,” said Mr. Zeller, a retired chief engineer with Rolls Royce, after seeing the performance with his wife at the Clowes Memorial Hall, Butler Arts Center on March 23. “The orchestra was very good. Just excellent. Just beautiful music, well played. Just very much enjoyed it.”

Mrs. Zeller, a retired CFO, added, “Oh my, there was so much. I loved the, of course, the dancing was fabulous, the costuming, the pageantry, the history. It was all just absolutely spectacular. The music was just outstanding. I enjoyed everything about it.”
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

The performance also featured patented backdrop technology that Mr. Zeller found “excellent” and aided the storytelling.

“My wife particularly enjoyed when the actors would interface with the screen. So when they would jump off the edge and then appear on the screen, she thought that was just outstanding,” he said.

Mrs. Zeller said she also enjoyed learning about the culture and beliefs of the Chinese, pre-communism.

“It was very good. I thought it was wonderful. I think they’re wonderful ambassadors for China before communism,” Mrs. Zeller said. “It was just so beautiful and serene and it seemed very, how do I say this? Just very spiritual.”

Traditional Chinese culture is a divinely inspired culture, and the Chinese for millennia believed their culture a gift from the heavens.

Mr. Zeller also found this spirituality interesting, saying he was excited the learn about the commonality the traditional Chinese culture had with other belief systems like his own.

“It was excellent. It was very good,” he said of this element.

“It was very good and we‘ll be back next year,” he added. “This is our first time here, but we’ll definitely be back.”
