Shen Yun Performing Arts will visit San Antonio with an all-new production once again at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. With a first performance on Dec. 30, performances will continue Dec. 31, Jan. 31, Feb. 1, and Feb. 2.

The New York-based performing arts company has become popular the world over since its inception in 2006, and San Antonio audiences are no exception. Last season, theatergoers attending Shen Yun in San Antonio were wowed.

For many audience members in San Antonio last year, seeing Shen Yun was a long-awaited dream come true. After an entire decade of hoping to see Shen Yun Performing Arts, Michael Brandes, a network engineer, finally got to see the global sensation.

“It’s amazing,” Mr. Brandes said. “It’s everything that we’ve hoped it was going to be.

“Any time you get a chance to see another country’s culture, you should always take the advantage of getting to see it,” he said. “This is probably one of the most amazing shows that I’ve ever seen.”

Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, known for reviving the millennia-old art form.

Former Latin dance teacher Laura Valentin came to Shen Yun with her daughter.

“I found the show to be exquisite. The dancing was so heartwarming and professional. I truly enjoyed the meticulousness of the steps and just the beauty and wonder of the Chinese culture,” she said.

Shen Yun’s patented animated backdrop, which allows performers to move seamlessly between the stage and the background, has been popular among audiences.

Shen Yun performs with a live orchestra that combines ancient Chinese and classical Western instruments. The erhu, a two-stringed Chinese instrument, is not only heard as part of the orchestra but also seen on stage for a solo performance.

“It just blew me away,” said Frank Samudio of the erhu solo at last year’s performance. “What I find is that it’s comforting, it’s relaxing.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization—a China before communism—and audiences around the world often note they feel traditional values expressed through the art.

In addition to classical Chinese dance, ethnic, and folk dances, as well as solo musical performances, Shen Yun artists raise awareness about ongoing human rights issues under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party in present-day China through a story-based dance.

Ms. Valentin had high praise for how the dancers interpreted China’s traditional culture.

“I think they did that exquisitely. Absolutely exquisitely. Tying in just the meaning of the spirit and the art with the dance. Just that expressiveness was truly just a momentous experience.”

This year, Shen Yun is set to perform in more than 200 cities around the world and across five continents; the 2025 touring season is shaping up to be the artists’ busiest yet and a glorious treat for theatergoers.
