PHOENIX—Adam Litberg saw in Shen Yun Performing Arts a revival of traditional culture he felt was relevant and universal.

“It’s beautiful and inspiring,” said Mr. Litberg, a general manager, after seeing the performance at Symphony Hall with his wife and mother-in-law on March 8.

Some stories were uplifting while others had moments that were very sad, and all in all, it was “very gorgeous,” he said.

“To understand and see the different cultures and the thought behind what the scenes are, it’s very interesting. You can feel the thoughts behind the movement,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company.

Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“It’s really sending us a very strong message about what it should be and incorporate some of what’s happening that’s not so good,” Mr. Litberg said. “It’s giving us the truth.”

Traditional Chinese culture is divinely inspired culture, what the Chinese, for millennia, believed a gift from the heavens. By contrast, the Chinese communist regime is officially atheist and has sought to destroy traditional Chinese culture since it seized power in 1949.

The stories in Shen Yun span millennia, from ancient myths, legends, and historical tales, up to the modern day. The current-day story-based dances are based on true events, with Shen Yun portraying characters who hold onto faith and tradition despite the communist regime’s violent religious persecution.

Mr. Litberg felt the performance also conveyed a message “to become more connected with the earth and spiritually, rather than these bad things that other communism brings.”

“I wish it would change,” he added. “I think they’re hoping for change.”

“It’s nice to see it displayed, for all of us to see,” Mr. Litberg said. He felt all the art came together to tell a story of China. “It’s very pure and brings it back to what the true roots of the story are.”
