NEW YORK CITY—Singer Sheryl Fiore is a soprano, so when a soprano bel canto singer took to the stage during Shen Yun Performing Arts, Ms. Fiore was deeply impressed.

“[She] was groundbreaking. She was wonderful,” Ms. Fiore said after seeing Shen Yun at Lincoln Center on April 10.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, reviving 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and dance. Along with around a dozen dance vignettes, Shen Yun programs also include musical solos, such as original songs performed in the authentic style but in the Chinese language.

Ms. Fiore said it was a “very joyful” experience.

“Great joy. You can feel the vibrations. The whole room is filled,” she said.

“I love seeing the young artists. They were so beautiful, and so well trained, so expressive, and they, of course, reached out to us and touched us. Very exciting,” she said. “I love the historical value. I love the cultural aspects. And the costumes are wonderful.”

Business investor Gary Cogan also enjoyed the performance, saying that his only regret was that he got tickets for the second row instead of the first.

“The performance was very beautiful ... graceful and beautiful,” Mr. Cogan said.

Some of the dances which featured long sleeves that trailed through the air like water—and thus called “water sleeves” dances—left a particular impression on Mr. Cogan, who said he was very impressed with the movement of classical Chinese dance.
A practitioner of martial arts and meditator, Mr. Cogan felt connected to the culture and movement he saw on stage.

“It inspires me a lot. I will work hard and again train hard,” Mr. Cogan said.

“I appreciate all their hard work and I only wish them luck,” he said. “I appreciate—definitely coming again, maybe with my friends, and we'll see it again.”
