WASHINGTON—Ivan Rocha was able to check two things off his bucket list on Feb. 22—“One was watching Shen Yun, the other one was being at the Kennedy Center,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has grown immensely in popularity since its inception in 2006, and this year is touring the world with eight groups set to visit around 200 cities.

“I wanted to watch it for several years, and I was lucky that I was able to see advertising about it early on, and I bought the tickets right away,” said Mr. Rocha, a former public health official.

Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and through music and dance aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and share with audiences the beauty of China before communism.
“I think the cultural component is amazing. It really takes you through the history, and it takes you through the story of a nation,” Mr. Rocha said, describing the ups and downs of the historical journey.
Traditional Chinese culture is divinely inspired, and Mr. Rocha found something universal in that spirituality.

“I think that the spiritual aspect is an integral component of the show because it really brings it together between what is culture and what is basically humanity,” he said.

Mr. Rocha said it was a performance he would recommend. “It’s something not to miss in this world,” he said.
