ST. LOUIS—William Jackson, who works in IT, and Colleen Jackson, a business analyst, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Stifel Theatre on March 3.

“It’s enjoyable to see the history of China up on stage, especially the way that they explain each act as we get ready to see each act,” said Mr. Jackson.

“I think the show is excellent. I’m enjoying it very much. I especially like the dancers; they’re very professional, and they move very well, and the outfits that they’re wearing … are outstanding,” he added.

New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by leading Chinese artists. Now the world’s leading classical Chinese dance and music company, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and the beauty of China before communism.
Besides a number of dance vignettes, Shen Yun’s program also includes story-based dances, some of which are set in modern-day China and depict the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of followers of Falun Dafa, a spiritual practice that teaches the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

Mrs. Jackson said that she had known a little about Falun Dafa prior to seeing Shen Yun but learned more about the persecution practitioners were facing through the performance.

“The one performance where they expose what’s happening to the practitioners, it solidifies what I’ve read about, and it makes it much, much more real,” she said.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Jackson said they believed it to be extremely important that Shen Yun was bringing the truth about the persecution to light on stage and raising awareness around the world.

“I think the more people know about it, the more they‘ll read it, the more they’ll start going to their congresspeople and complaining about it,” said Mrs. Jackson.

Mrs. Jackson said that it was also very important to revive traditional Chinese culture.

“The people there, they’re not even allowed to know their own traditions anymore. Since the ‘60s, the social revolution, they have not been able to enjoy their culture anymore. I think it’s very upsetting,” she said.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson agreed that Shen Yun was spreading the message “that there’s more to China than communism.”

“We think today of China as only being communist, but it’s so diverse, and it has such a wonderful history,” Mrs. Jackson added. “It’s nice to see that [history].”
