FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—The profound beauty of Shen Yun Performing Arts demonstrates that art is a universal language that can inspire all.

Though the New York-based company’s performances are based on classical Chinese dance and Chinese folk dance, the deeper theme of spirituality embedded within the dances made a lasting impression with audience member Pat Riley, who attended the Saturday evening performance, Jan. 9, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

“It shows how different cultures are so unique, and yet the stories of humanity show we go through very much the same” things, said Ms. Riley, who is a scientist and founder of a cosmetic company, Clientele Beauty.

One of Shen Yun’s unique features is that its artists follow the ancient Chinese belief of looking toward the divine for inspiration, using art as a means to uplift and bring joy to people, according to the company’s website.

Ms. Riley felt the thousands of years of Chinese culture within the performance. “This is a very important show because it teaches people about civilization and culture and the ancient wisdom that is so true to today,” Riley said. That wisdom tells us that “we’re all one, around the world. We’re just one humanity.”

She recommended that others also go and watch this eye-opening experience.

Audience member Steven, who didn’t offer his last name, was similarly taken by the beauty of Shen Yun. The experience was so intense he found it difficult to describe in words, “as if I was in a dream,” said Steven, who is a mathematician.

“I would say what gives you joy when you see a bird fly by or when you see a fish jump out of the water, that sound of the water, and the sight of the bird overhead, at the same time. It is something that cannot be described and has to be experienced,” he said.

He was especially delighted by how the orchestra and the dancers matched seamlessly. “It’s so well done you don’t notice that it’s [orchestra] there, but then you hear it once in a while, so it’s perfectly synchronized with what’s going on the stage,” Steven said.

“The performers were so in sync, everything happened symmetrically at the same time,” he raved.
