HOUSTON—Entrepreneur George Baylor attended, with members of four generations of his family, Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston, Dec. 31.
“It was absolutely fantastic,” Mr. Baylor said. “I’m glad that my daughter got tickets and invited us.” Mr. Baylor’s wife, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter were in attendance as well.
As 2013 came close to an end, seeing New York-based Shen Yun’s revival of the divinely inspired Chinese culture was fitting, according to Mr. Baylor, CEO of Baylor Companies and founder of many businesses.
“It’s a special time knowing that new history is going to be in front of us with the New Year,” Mr. Baylor said.
“It’s a historical perspective, but at the same time we need to know that there is going to be new history made in the years to come,” Mr. Baylor said. “And everybody is going to get balanced.”
Mr. Baylor said parts of the show were very emotional, as they showed the traditional culture of the country that is now not allowed in China under the current regime. But Shen Yun presented hope.
“[It] gives everybody hope,” Mr. Baylor said. “They can make it through.”
Mr. Baylor said everything from the music to the dance to the songs sung by the solo vocalists told a story of China’s history. “And it’s beautiful,” Mr. Baylor said. “Everything—the music, the words, everything was great.”
Shen Yun’s solo vocalists sang original Chinese compositions in the bel canto style, and the dances included classical Chinese dance and some ethnic and folk dances, like the dance of the Yao people.
“The timing was just sensational,” Mr. Baylor said.
