DETROIT—Mark Kurfess, a real estate developer and business owner, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Detroit Opera House on Feb. 9.

“What I enjoyed the most was ... the culture,” Mr. Kurfess said. “[Shen Yun] opens your eyes ... [to] what actually is going on. It’s just absolutely moving.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun’s mission has been to revive traditional Chinese culture and show the beauty of “China before communism.”
Shen Yun’s program also includes story-based dances, some of which are set in modern-day China and depict the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of followers of Falun Gong, a spiritual practice that teaches the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Mr. Kurfess said it was “very, very important” for people to know what was happening in today’s China.

“Without awareness, nothing can be done,” he said. “Something has to be done. We hear about it from news outlets, and social media outlets, and so on. To see it on a stage like this, in this light, and also from folks that are of that nationality, totally changed your opinion about it.”

Seeing spiritual practitioners persevere despite facing oppression showed Mr. Kurfess that “faith, believing in the works of ... faith is the only strength that you really have to work yourself through living in that type of an environment.”

Mr. Kurfess believes that the values depicted in Shen Yun’s performance are “very, very important to the world today ... because there has to be a foundation.”

“There has to be truth. Where are we going to get without truth? We’re going to be stepping in error as we go through our lives. If we don’t know truth, we just step into error.”

Mr. Kurfess appreciated being able to see ancient China and modern-day China contrasted live on stage. He summarized Shen Yun in one word—breathtaking—and expressed how much he desired to see it again.

“I almost wish I could come back and watch it again, like tomorrow,” he said.
