MISSISSAUGA, Ontario—Marie Lippens, a university professor, was blown away by the talent and dedication of Shen Yun Performing Arts members after seeing a performance for the first time.

“Just wow! I mean, their talent and their work ethic to put something together, their movements were so precise and so synchronized. It almost seems unreal,” Ms. Lippens said, seeing the March 22 performance at the Living Arts Centre.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“The first curtain rose, and the colors and the energy and the movement of the dancers just captures you right away,” Ms. Lippens said.

“It was a bit of a cultural education, I think, and entertaining all at once, which was beautiful,” she said. “I thought it was beautiful, very artful, a lot of talent.”

Ms. Lippens said she enjoyed the artful dances and storytelling, which was peppered with humor and buoyed by spiritual meaning, creating a “wonderful mix.”
A stand-out moment for Ms. Lippens was a solo musical performance when an erhu virtuoso took to the stage. The erhu is a two-stringed instrument that dates back nearly 4,000 years and is played with a bow.
“It had maybe four different emotions that it went through, at least four different moods, tempos. At the end, it was very light and exciting, but it had it all. I just thought it was fascinating,” Ms. Lippens said. “That’s what music does for you. So yeah, that is why we come to shows like these, right? The live music component and the cultural story behind it made it just fascinating.”

‘It Will Touch Your Soul’

Also attending Shen Yun for the first time was Chris Ali, who, too, felt transported by the performance.
Mr. Ali, who attended the performance with his wife, said he hadn’t known much about the spiritual beliefs of ancient China, yet from the very first act, it resonated with him. There were scenes of heaven, divine beings, and the Creator in the program, and some were deeply moving for Mr. Ali, who is a spiritual person himself.

“All I can say again is that just resonated from the start of the show,” said Mr. Ali, who noted he was going through something personal, and was comforted by the performance. He saw in the performance the three words “truth, compassion, tolerance,” and said it resonated with him so much he purchased a bracelet with the words after the show.

Mr. Ali felt a positive energy radiate out from the artists as if a large shield enveloped the audience. He felt “warmth and love.”

“It was a very, very great message sent to us even from our past loved ones,” he said. “It was for me personally, spiritual. The dancing, the performing, the singing, the musical notes from the two-piece violin, and the baritone singing. It honestly touched my soul.”

Mr. Ali said he believed Shen Yun would resonate with people of any religion.

“Very uplifting. And the message, it doesn’t matter what religion you are. And I’m Christian and my wife’s Christian. It resonates right to your soul,” he said. “In this day and age where religion divides, Shen Yun brought a lot of people together. I saw that.”

“It’s the feeling you get from the entire show. And all I can say is, if you believe in that higher power, this is a great show to come watch because it will touch your soul,” he said.

“Everything was top-notch, beautiful! Anyone wants to come see it, come see!” he said.
