ATLANTA—John and Yvonne Jensen were interested to glimpse the five-millennia civilization of China before communism through Shen Yun Performing Arts, and found that it was a culture themes and values with similarities to their own.

“It was just a wonderful show,” said Mr. Jensen after seeing the performance at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on Jan. 31.Mr. Jensen works in robotics, and he and his wife also own a manufacturing company.

“The most memorable part was just the culture, the way it was put together, the storytelling, the whole flow of it. Just starting out telling the culture, the history, the country, the history of the show itself, and the cultural dances, the music, just beautiful,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and dance. Since 2006, the company has shown the world the beauty of China before communism.

“It was beautiful, it was visually stunning, and it was the message of peace and kindness and the importance of tradition were so emphasized and woven throughout and were very deeply impressive,” said Mrs. Jensen.

Mrs. Jensen said the parallels she saw to their own Christian history and culture were amazing and gave her much to contemplate. For example, she said, she learned that the tumbling techniques in gymnastics—such as aerial flips and leaps—actually originated from classical Chinese dance, which goes back thousands of years and is one of the most comprehensive and expressive dance forms, as Shen Yun emcees explained.

“So that has opened up my mind to the origins of things,” she said.

Mr. Jensen added that the stagecraft of the production was beautiful, including the animated backdrop of Shen Yun’s own design, and a moment where clouds appeared on stage with what he expected was a fog machine.

“That was amazing. I was amazed by the timing. How did they get the timing, [on] the backdrop, and they would jump in and out of the scenes? The timing was precise. I want to know how they did that,” he said. “And the fog was wonderful. The way it opened up—big clouds on the stage. And then they popped out of the clouds. The technology was wonderful.”

“Costumes were incredible,” he added. “How did they do such a big performance and keep all those costumes as beautiful as they are?”
Shen Yun produces an all-new program each year and now tours hundreds of cities worldwide across five continents. Last season, its eight companies performed nearly 800 shows total, and this season Shen Yun will be visiting some cities that have not hosted the performance for years.
