MESA, Ariz.—Michelle Lynn, a professional singer, and Denise Rute, a country professional dancer, were thoroughly amazed by the Shen Yun performance at the Ikeda Theater at Mesa Arts Center on Feb. 13.

“The singer was beautiful, very emotional.” said Ms. Lynn, “I love the words and what it stands for. It’s very special to my faith.”

In addition to dance and live orchestra accompaniment, a Shen Yun performance also features solo singers. The lyrics are originally written in Chinese and then translated and projected on the backdrop. Reflecting on human life with deep layers of meaning, they resonate with audience members of different races, nations, and religious backgrounds.

Ms. Lynn continued, “I’m a Christian, so I serve a higher power, which is God to me. The singing, the [mention of] heaven are very special to my faith.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company based in New York. Founded in 2006, Shen Yun has a mission to revive the traditional Chinese culture that is being destroyed by the communist regime in China. Through dance, Shen Yun portrays the courage and faith of Falun Gong practitioners under persecution in China.

Such dance pieces moved Ms. Rute to tears. “I cried because it’s very emotional because I know it’s true,” Ms. Rute said. “The Chinese people are amazing people but they’re not allowed to be who they are in China.”

This was the second time Ms. Rute watched Shen Yun. She recalled a similar experience when she watched one of the story dances in the show, “I came four years ago when they had the show on the organ harvesting, and I had tears just running down my face.”

Ms. Lynn said, “It [the persecution] is so wrong. Very wrong.”

Ms. Rute appreciates Shen Yun’s mission and said that “the only way to make change is to educate people on the truth.”

To those who have not watched Shen Yun, Ms. Lynn wants to tell them, “It is a must-see. You must come and see it. You must experience it. Because it is a spiritual experience. More mind, body, and soul.”

Ms. Rute encouraged the Shen Yun artists to keep doing what they were doing; she said, “Continue what you’re doing and you’re all amazing dancers.”
