COSTA MESA, Calif.—The Honorable Francisco Firmat, a retired California Superior Court judge, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts with his friend Frank Remski, a Lutheran pastor, at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, March 15.

Mr. Firmat has served close to three decades in the courtroom, and is the recipient of the Franklin G. West Award, the Orange County Bar Association’s highest honor.

“We really enjoyed it,” said Mr. Firmat.

“I normally go to sleep in these shows,” added Mr. Remski. “This time, I didn’t dare go to sleep, because if I did, I’d miss too much. It was beautiful.”

Established in 2006, Shen Yun is a New York-based non-profit dedicated to reviving 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the performing arts. Having reached millions of people across some 20 countries and 100 cities, Shen Yun has become widely recognized as an international phenomenon.

“It was just a riot of colors, and really talented young dancers, and wonderful use of technology for the background,” said Mr. Firmat. “The telling of the tales was very well done, very [well] put on stage.”

According to the Shen Yun website, “In less than ten minutes each, Shen Yun dances recount ancient myths, bygone heroes, or celestial paradises. Whether set in the past or in contemporary China, every dance embodies traditional Chinese values. Ideals of loyalty, filial piety, and veneration for the divine are cherished and celebrated.”

Mr. Firmat seemed to be quite impressed with the use of color throughout the performance.

“[The] colors, the swirling of the colors, it seems like every set of colors was richer than the previous set of colors,” he said. “It’s just wonderful.”

Mr. Remski’s overall impression of the performance was also filled with high praise.

“I thought the show was unbelievable,” said Mr. Remski.

“The color, the music … the girls were so graceful, the men were exciting,” he added. “I could go see it again, with no problem at all. I love the show.”
