GREENSBORO, N.C.—Jill Bowman, a Sponsor Services Manager for the Winston-Salem Open, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening performance at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts with her mother, Vivian, for the first time—and they’re already planning a return.

“It was wonderful, it was great. We’re huge fans. I’m going to come again. It’s amazing; everyone is so flexible and athletic. Wow. It was a treat,” Ms. Bowman exclaimed.

“I love it. I think it is just beautiful. I love the stories. I love the way they are incorporating the [3D] screen in the background. It’s so artistic. It’s just beautiful.”

Ms. Bowman especially enjoyed the story-dance piece depicting a young man falling in love with a beautiful fairy, and through overcoming hardships, proved that true love can conquer all.
“Everything is so choreographed. It’s perfectly timed. Everybody just moves as one. Amazing,” she said. “I hope they’ll continue [to perform,] I’m sure there’s so many stories in the oldest country in the world—they can tell stories forever.”
The New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the communist party.

Endowed with 5,000 years of history, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine.” For millennia, its people believed that by keeping their hearts pure and adhering to strict moral standards, they would be blessed by the divine.

Indeed, for 5,000 years, the country prospered. However, after the communist takeover and its spread of atheism, all this traditional culture experienced systematic destruction. Today, Shen Yun’s mission is to bring back the beauty and goodness of pre-communist China.

Ms. Bowman agrees that this mission is very important.

“I don’t have exposure to this kind of culture, to get to come see these stories and just be a little bit more informed is hugely important. It bridges a gap. We’re left in the dark over here a lot about what goes on across the world. So, I think it’s just beautiful,” she said.

Reflecting on the spiritual aspect of the performance, Ms. Bowman added that she was surprised by how similar the traditional values are to her own faith.

“My spiritual beliefs align with the show, with the spiritual message in the show so I feel it’s uplifting. It’s very, just gives you peace, it’s very peaceful and hopeful,” she said.

Shen Yun gives us “tolerance and acceptance, and all of the things that make us kind people. It’s what we want. It tells the story and gives that positive message. It’s hopeful for heaven and life on [earth] that we can live together in harmony and respect each other.”

Finally, Ms. Bowman would like to thank the performers for sharing their talent and the beauty of the cultural stories that they bring.

“I’m just so grateful to get to have the opportunity to learn more and see more and I want more,” she said.
