TAINAN, Taiwan—Seven members of Professor Zeng Qiming’s family from different parts of Taiwan decided to come together for a special occasion—the opportunity to see Shen Yun Performing Arts on tour from New York.

After seeing the performance, they said the joy they had experienced would be lasting: “We love enjoying this auditory and visual feast together. We feel so touched that the impression will last for life,” said Professor Zeng at the Tainan Municipal Cultural Center on April 2.

“I hope that we can enjoy Shen Yun together every year to enrich our lives,” he added.

‘The show was just magical!’

As one of Shen Yun’s fans, Mr. Zeng, an emeritus professor of a university in Tainan, says he is always happy seeing Shen Yun perform.

Even after seeing Shen Yun perform for many years, Mr. Zeng was still excited about the incredible digital backdrop design. The coordination of the dancers and the backdrop “was just perfect,” he said. “It seemed that the goddesses flew to you at one moment and flew back to Heaven the next.

“The show was just magical!” he said once more. “Its spirit is most satisfying.”

He recalled his experiences with Shen Yun in past years: “The images of the entire performance have always stayed in my mind after going home. It’s unforgettable even in dreams.”

Shen Yun brought the family authentic traditional Chinese culture, cleansed their souls, and helped them regain the happiness of being pure and simple, they said.

‘I saw martial arts’

Mr. Zeng says all the dancers are not only sweet and charming but have mastered all kinds of challenging skills. “They are not only superb in dance. I saw martial arts as well. Their fundamentals are excellent.”

“In Chinese, the words for ‘dance’ and for ’martial arts’ are pronounced exactly the same— ‘wu’,” the program notes. It implies they “have the same historical roots; the two merely differ in their forms and requirements.”

“All of the dancers are good at the skills like turns, flips, spins, and other high-flying aerial and tumbling techniques,” added Mr. Zeng. “It was just awesome.”

‘Breakthrough in Music’

“It was innovative and refreshing to listen to,” said Mr. Zeng of the erhu soloist and her piano accompaniment. He is an erhu player himself.

The erhu is a classical Chinese instrument with only two-strings, but it produces a wide range of emotions.

“Western music has its traits of elegance while the 5,000-year ancient Chinese instruments have their unique features,” he said. “To combine both and play live music to accompany the dance is quite challenging. It’s a major breakthrough in music.”

‘It’s educational’

Mr. Zeng believes Shen Yun’s educational value is beneficial for audience members. “It’s educational for combining traditional art, culture, and moral values,” he explained.

He was particularly impressed by Shen Yun’s mini-dramatic dances, portraying the principles of “truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance,” saying, “We Chinese stress ‘forbearance.’ Fostering forbearance can help maintain public order as well.”

He believes that people should learn and be inspired by Shen Yun’s mini-dramatic dances: “Forbearance is the loftiest virtue. Through forbearance… one can reach a beautiful realm.”

‘The Ultimate in Beauty’

Mr. Zeng’s wife, a music teacher, was excited after seeing Shen Yun perform.

“Shen Yun is the ultimate in beauty. It’s unforgettable, like [images of] goddesses descending from the heaven,” she said. “That’s why I come to see Shen Yun perform every year.”

“Its beauty has reached a spiritual realm, in which I feel the vitality of life and the transcendence of spirit,” she explained.

At last, she stressed: “Shen Yun is excellent, the ultimate, and stunning. As the old saying goes, ‘Good music will linger in mind for three days after listening to it.’” With Shen Yun, “It’s not only for three days or three months. It’s for life. It’s just indelible.”
