DENVER—Jocelyn DiChiara, a psychotherapist, and Shawne Mastronardi, a contractor, found Shen Yun Performing Arts absolutely fantastic after attending the matinee at the Buell Theatre on April 6. This marked the company’s final show in Denver, and the duo loved every minute of it.

“I thought it was absolutely beautiful to watch. I love the style of dance and I love the music. I thought the instruments were beautiful and the singing and the individual artists were beautiful,” Ms. DiChiara expressed.

“The sounds, the sights—it was just really gorgeous all the way, on all the senses. I really loved it. I love the stories and the screen and how they went in and out of the screen. I thought that was really creative. I’ve never seen a show quite like that. So that was really original to me.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, dedicated to reviving China’s rich culture—nearly lost under decades of communist rule.

Classical Chinese dance is an ancient and highly expressive art form dating back thousands of years. Unlike the modern, military-influenced styles often seen in China today, Shen Yun preserves and performs this tradition in its most authentic form, as it was originally passed down through generations.
The performers are “just so impressive. They were just amazing to watch—the way they move, the flipping, the singing, playing the instruments. The orchestra was great. All of it. Really talented,” Ms. DiChiara said.

She thought the solo performance by the erhu virtuoso was “just gorgeous.” The erhu is an ancient Chinese instrument that is reminiscent of the human voice. Though it only has two strings, it is capable of expressing a wide range of emotions.

Moreover, DiChiara appreciated the spiritual message conveyed by the artists and felt their energy radiating from the stage.

“I feel it in my heart, in my ears—just all over,” she said. The message is “one of compassion and beauty in the human spirit.”

“I just feel the connection with the beauty of it all and the compassion—the human connection with nature, with humans, with movement, dance, song—all that we can do as humans. That’s nice.”

Ms. Mastronardi, too, enjoyed the performance. For her, it was “a sensory experience” that showed “respect for the human soul and a reverence for beauty and how that helps us heal and come together.”

I will tell my friends to “definitely come experience it,” Ms. Mastronardi stated. “I highly recommend it.”

This season, Shen Yun’s eight touring companies are bringing their stunning performances to over 200 cities worldwide. With a brand-new program each year, the company’s 18th anniversary marks another season full of fresh surprises for both first-time and returning audiences alike.
