LONG BEACH, Calif.—On March 30, Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, who represents the City of Long Beach, attended Shen Yun’s evening performance at the Terrace Theater. The show was everything she hoped it would be.

“I absolutely loved the show, and it’s only the first half. It’s wonderful,” she said during intermission. “It’s just so magical. It was transformational, and I’m glad that we have it here in the city of Long Beach.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 by a group of elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of China’s communist regime. For years, these artists have dreamt of reviving the glory of China’s 5,000 years of civilization.
In the free world, their mission blossomed. Since its establishment in 2006, Shen Yun has met with widespread praise and acclaim. Now the world’s leading Chinese dance and music company, these New York-based artists are slated to perform in over 180 cities on their world tour this year.

Councilwoman Zendejas was moved by the beauty of Shen Yun. She felt transported to a whole new realm.

“It was just so touching and very emotional. It was so incredible just watching it and being able to see ourselves in that era and in that environment through each piece that was so beautifully displayed on that stage,” she exclaimed.

“I can’t even put it into words—it was just so incredibly magical.”

Moreover, she resonated deeply with the traditional values depicted in the show.

“The beauty of loyalty, of family, and just bravery and courage—all those things in one. It was just amazing,” she stated, adding that the show was “life-changing.”

She especially appreciated the piece where the dancers’ long sleeves billowed and flowed like the gentle movement of water on stage.

“I enjoyed every piece, but that one really blew me away. “The Sleeves of Grace,” was just amazing. The dance, the culture, the beauty, and the magic that it brought was just absolutely incredible.”

According to the company’s website, these sleeves were a part of ancient Chinese feminine attire representing humility and grace.

“Once you come here and see it for the first time, you’ll want to come back and see it every time it’s in town. I think what I got from the show today was that it’s so important to understand culture from its historic forum and be able to embrace it and celebrate it,” Councilwoman Zendejas added.

“That’s what I want to continue doing as long as we keep having [Shen Yun] back and keep being able to show this to the public and to the residents here in Southern California.”
Last but not least, she would like to thank all the performers “for their talent and for showing the public how beautiful this world is through the moves that [they made.]”

“Thank you all for the hard work that goes into putting on the show, and thank you for sharing it with the world.”
