MADISON, Wis.—Dona Hohensee, an executive health director, and her husband Philip, a retired medical technician, weren’t quite sure what to expect when they arrived at the Overture Center for the Arts for Shen Yun’s only performance in Madison on the evening of Feb. 19.

By intermission, the couple was certain they had made the right choice.

“Oh, it’s amazing. It’s so delightful, just so delightful,” Mrs. Hohensee exclaimed. Sitting close to the stage, she loved being able to see the performers’ faces up close. “It’s just beautiful. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried—it’s been wonderful.”

Mr. Hohensee, too, enjoyed the evening and thought the whole performance was very impressive. “We love it … it’s just been very nice. I’m very happy with it,” he expressed.

Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by New York-based artists who dreamt of reviving and sharing with the world China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture. Its eight equally-sized companies are slated to visit over 200 cities this year.

The company’s performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Moreover, Mrs. Hohensee loved the vibrant colors of the dancers’ costumes and the 3D backdrop.

“Beautiful. I love all the details. That’s the one part about being so close—you see all the details to their beautiful costumes,” she stated.

Reflecting on the artists’ mission to revive traditional Chinese culture, Mrs. Hohensee said, “as someone that didn’t know much about it, I’m learning a lot and really appreciating what they’re offering tonight.”
She plans to look into the subject and read more about it later. For the night, it was the dancers’ personalities that stole the show. Their extraordinary talent was undeniable.

“It’s lovely. It’s been beautiful and especially, I feel like that they’re all very warm and smiling and really wanting to do well and be beautiful,” she said.

“They’re trying to bring a positive note to what is happening from their culture. They’re trying to get us to understand it in a beautiful way.”
