LAS VEGAS—Bob and Caroline Kelliher were swept up by the beauty of the Shen Yun performance at Reynolds Hall in The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, on the evening of February 22.
Mr. Kelliher is the general manager of Discount Party Store Developers, Inc. He heads the company development team, which is reputed to be the largest developer of independent party stores in North America.
Mrs. Kelliher is a chef instructor at the Las Vegas campus for the internationally renowned Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College. Le Cordon Bleu first opened its doors in Paris in 1895.
The precision of the dancers enthralled Mr. Kelliher: “I love it. It’s wonderful. It’s amazing how they’re all precise and doing the same movement.”
“Classical Chinese dance has its own set of training methods in basic skills and has strict training in both physical expression and specific postures. It also involves learning combinations of leaps, turns, flips, spins and other aerial and tumbling techniques. It is a vast and independent system of dance,” explains the Shen Yun website.
“I think it’s beautiful. Everybody is so in sync. I was telling my husband that you can’t even hear the footsteps,” remarked Mrs. Kelliher.
“They’re so precise. It’s beautiful!” she added.
Mr. Kelliher was fascinated by several vignettes—he couldn’t narrow it down to just one which stood out for him.
“I like the lantern one, (Lantern Joy). The meatball (one) was funny, (Ne Zha Churns The Sea). The kids studying with the beehive, that was awesome (When Play Turns To Panic).”
The Shen Yun Orchestra is unique, which the website describes: “The Shen Yun Orchestra masterfully blends two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions. Ancient Chinese instruments such as the soul-stirring erhu and the delicate pipa lead the melody on top of a full orchestra of Western strings, percussion, woodwinds, and brass. The Western orchestra with its energy and grandeur, and the Chinese instruments with their distinct tones and styles, create a dramatic new sound.”
Mr. Kelliher thought the orchestra was “wonderful.”
“I’m enjoying it. This is awesome,” he added.
Summing up the entire evening Mrs. Kelliher said, “I’m very impressed. Very impressed.”
