LAS VEGAS—Executive Vice President Lynn Murrow was thoroughly impressed by Shen Yun Performing Arts after attending the company’s opening show at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 27. Exiting the theater at the end of the evening, Murrow was full of praise for the experience.

“I loved it. It is an amazing journey and an amazing cause,” she said. “I can’t imagine being separated from such a rich culture. So, I absolutely loved it. I learned a lot.”

As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, China’s 5,000 years of history is filled with breathtaking legends and rich traditions. Yet, within just a few decades of the Chinese communists’ rise to power, this magnificent culture was almost destroyed.
Today, these New York-based artists are working to revive this lost civilization and bring it back to the world through dance and music, the beauty of pre-communist China.
Ms. Murrow shared that it’s such a pity that China is “losing a culture over a political takeover” and felt deep respect for Shen Yun artists because they are “trying so hard to keep that rich culture and to make sure that people [in future generations can] see the deep, rich history of the Chinese people.”

“I think that’s really important,” she said.

Although Shen Yun has received widespread acclaim since its inception in 2006, its focus on reviving traditional culture and revealing the truth of events under communist rule in modern-day China has led the regime to forbid the company from performing in China.

Ms. Murrow said it’s crucial for people to know what’s going on. “This show is a way to spread that to everyone around the world so that they really understand what has been lost,” she added.

The traditional Chinese culture she experienced at Shen Yun was pure beauty.

“The beauty and the dance and the arts and the appreciation of the divine and the appreciation of nature—that’s what [Shen Yun] meant to me,” Ms. Murrow stated.

She especially enjoyed the Mongolian dance and loved that the dancers’ movements were very smooth and connected.

“I thought it was beautiful and I thought that it just showed amazing skill and discipline. You can really see how the dancers have probably worked most of their life in order to learn the traditional culture of that dance and to be able to perform it,” she said.

“The fluidity of the dance and the tradition—to be so precise and to be able to perform as a [group] is amazing,” she said.

Ms. Murrow plans to share her experience on social media and encourage her friends to attend an upcoming performance to see Shen Yun for themselves.

This season, Shen Yun’s eight touring companies are bringing their stunning performances to over 200 cities worldwide. With a brand-new program each year, the company’s 19th anniversary marks another season full of fresh surprises for both first-time and returning audiences alike.
