AUSTIN, Texas—Jeffrey Palermo, Chairman of a software engineering firm, thoroughly enjoyed the first of Shen Yun’s five performances at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 26. Stepping out of the evening show, Mr. Palermo was captivated and eager for more.

“I’d like to see more of it. It’s a very beautiful show. Very well done. The dancing was amazing,” he said. “[It is] a world-class art, world-class performance that uses its platform to teach about God.”

The New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded by elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the communist party.
For thousands of years, China’s rich civilization thrived, built on a deep belief that those who lead a virtuous life will be blessed by the divine. However, since the Chinese Communist Party’s takeover in 1949, these traditional values have been undermined and replaced with atheism.
Shen Yun’s mission is to restore the goodness and glory of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture and share with the world its beauty before communism.

Mr. Palermo, a devout Christian, loved this aspect of the performance and deeply respects the performers’ courage in standing up for their beliefs.

“What struck me the most was [Shen Yun’s] teaching about the Creator of this world and that atheism and evolution is deceitful. That’s a very important theme that everyone should hear,” he said.

This is crucial because “[humans] are created in the image of the Creator, and he’s going to come back to this world to save us.”

Referring to a story-dance piece depicting the violent persecution of people of faith by the Chinese communist regime, Mr. Palermo said it made him “think of connections all over the world where people are persecuted for speaking the truth and talking about God.”

“This show is talking about [faith] being persecuted in China, but it’s not only in China, it’s persecuted everywhere,” he stated.

Mr. Palermo would be interested in looking more into the origin of Shen Yun because he sees a lot of parallels between its stories and the ancient scrolls of Christianity.

He pointed out that both emphasize “the world was created for a reason and humans are divine.” That’s very different from the theory of evolution, which suggests that humans were created by chance and are no different from any other animals.

This year marks Shen Yun’s 19th anniversary, and the company has received widespread acclaim since its founding in 2006. In response to public demand, it has expanded from one to eight equally large companies, set to perform in over 200 cities this season.

Always full of surprises, Shen Yun can be counted on to delight its audiences with a brand-new set of music and choreography each year.
