COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Josh Bowen, a logistics manager, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts on March 29.

“It was phenomenal,” Mr. Bowen said. “[It was a] really, really good cultural experience.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 and is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception, Shen Yun has expanded from one to eight equally sized companies that tour around the world simultaneously, reviving traditional Chinese culture and showcasing the beauty of “China before communism.”

Shen Yun depicts the spiritual elements of traditional Chinese culture, and it is for this reason that the atheist Chinese Communist Party does not allow Shen Yun to perform in China.

“I think that’s wonderful that they’re showing this here, and I’m astounded that it’s illegal in China,” Mr. Bowen said.

Mr. Bowen described Shen Yun’s presentation of spirituality as “remarkable,” and that through the performance, he saw the message that “establishing people as equals ... we can’t really do that with purely physical [standards], we’ve got to move into the spiritual in order to truly do that.”

Every year, Shen Yun puts on an all-new production. The resident choreographers, composers, and everyone else involved in production work together to bring the best of Chinese culture to the world.
